A spectacular celestial event is set to captivate billions, as a total lunar eclipse, commonly known as a 'blood moon,' is predicted to occur on the evening of Sunday, Pagume 2, 2017 E.C. (Tuesday, September 7, 2025 G.C.). Dr. Rodas Tadesse, a prominent astronomer, confirmed the highly anticipated event, stating that the moon will take on a dramatic red hue.
The eclipse is expected to be visible across all of Ethiopia, extending its reach to other African nations, as well as parts of Asia and Australia. Dr. Rodas explained that the phenomenon will be observed in three distinct phases: a total eclipse, a partial eclipse, and a penumbral (faint) eclipse.
Elaborating on the mechanics of a lunar eclipse, he clarified that it happens when the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow that prevents sunlight from reaching the moon's surface. However, the moon does not disappear completely. As it moves through the Earth's umbra (the darkest part of the shadow), it will appear red due to sunlight filtering through the Earth's atmosphere.
Dr. Rodas announced the eclipse will be visible from 12:28 a.m. EAT to 15:11 a.m. EAT and will reach its peak brilliance at 15:11 a.m. EAT, when the moon will be a vivid, brilliant red.
He encouraged all Ethiopians to witness this remarkable event and enjoy a memorable night. He also advised those in cloudy regions to exercise patience, as the clouds may temporarily obstruct their view.
