Ethiopia's Minister of Education, Professor Berhanu Nega, has declared a major shift in how the country's universities will be evaluated.
Moving forward, competition among higher education institutions will be based on the quality of education they provide, rather than the size of their campuses or the number of buildings they possess.
The new criteria will focus on the caliber of students produced, the relevance of research, and how well universities are preparing graduates for a globalized world.
The minister also warned of increased accountability for corrupt practices and a lack of truthful reporting from universities in the coming year.
