Ethiopia has highlighted its enduring strategic alliance with Italy during a development cooperation peer review hosted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). An Ethiopian delegation, led by State Minister of Finance Semereta Sewasew alongside Ambassador Mahlet Hailu, told the forum that the partnership is a testament to mutual trust and tangible development success.

Addressing the assembly, State Minister Semereta traced the history of bilateral cooperation back nearly half a century. She praised Italy’s consistent support across vital sectors, including healthcare, water and sanitation, renewable energy, and agriculture. Specifically, she noted how Italian investment in the coffee value chain and infrastructure has not only improved livelihoods but has also been instrumental in catalysing private sector participation and bolstering social resilience.

The Minister emphasised that Ethiopia’s "Homegrown Economic Reform" agenda, backed by strong political leadership, is yielding significant results. These reforms have successfully narrowed the budget deficit and led to a fivefold increase in both domestic revenue and pro-poor spending. Furthermore, she pointed to the modernisation of public financial management systems as a key driver for enhanced transparency and accountability within the state.

Looking ahead, the two nations have formalised a new €250 million cooperation framework for 2026–2028. This agreement will augment an existing $550 million project portfolio, focusing on direct budget support, food security, and large-scale infrastructure. The partnership is also set to expand private sector involvement in telecommunications, energy, and the upcoming Bishoftu International Airport project—a move expected to drive inclusive growth and strengthen regional connectivity.

Stefano Gatti, Italy’s Director General for Development Cooperation, echoed these sentiments, describing the relationship as a decades-long commitment built on "mutual trust and measurable impact."
