The House of Peoples' Representatives has created the conditions necessary for a transparent, democratic, and fair election supported by digital technology, according to the Speaker of the House, Tagesse Chafo.
Speaker Tagesse said that by amending the country's electoral proclamation, parliament had established a favourable environment for the upcoming vote.
The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) recently announced the schedule for the 7th General Election, with voter registration set to run from mid-February to mid-March 2026, and polling day confirmed for 1 June 2026.
In light of this timeline, the Board stated it had undertaken wide-ranging preparations, from securing logistical supplies to conducting training and public awareness campaigns.
Speaker Tagesse noted that the NEBE is an independent constitutional body mandated to oversee elections and referendums. He said the Board’s report confirmed it had made sufficient preparations to conduct the election in accordance with the constitution.
The Speaker highlighted that parliament had passed necessary legal amendments to ensure the election is fair, peaceful, and credible. Specifically, he explained that the amendment of Proclamation No. 1162/2019 has enabled candidate and voter registration, along with other Board operations, to be supported by digital technology.
He also stressed the vital role civil society organisations play in observing the process and raising voter awareness.
The government is currently making preparations to facilitate the transparency and credibility of the vote in response to requests from the Election Board, he added.
Noting that efforts are underway to ensure the election process is conducted with national consensus, Tagesse called on all stakeholders to play their part in ensuring its success, according to ENA.
