Jun 20, 2026 1251

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has announced that Ethiopia is building a massive, secure national data cloud to ensure the country’s data sovereignty. The infrastructure, currently under development at the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, features a capacity that exceeds the combined output of existing institutional data centers, providing a secure environment for sensitive national information.

In addition to software development, the Prime Minister revealed that the country is expanding into hardware production. The AI Institute, in partnership with other institutions and the AI University, is actively working to establish a factory for the domestic manufacturing of laptops and iPads.

The Prime Minister emphasized that these initiatives represent a historic foundation that will transition Ethiopia toward full technological independence within a few years. These efforts are complemented by the country’s growing digital ecosystem, which currently includes 55 million Telebirr users and 45 million Digital ID (Fayda) registrants.
