Yomif Kejelcha Shatters Half Marathon World Record in Buenos Aires

Aug 27, 2026 2

Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha has etched his name into running history once again, delivering a breathtaking performance to reclaim the men’s half-marathon world record in Argentina. Blazing through the course at the Media Maratón Ciudad de Buenos Aires, the long-distance star became the first runner in history to officially break the 57-minute barrier, stopping the clock at an astounding 56 minutes and 51 seconds.

According to a report by Reuters, yomif shaved an impressive 29 seconds off the previous world mark of 57:20, which was set by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon earlier this year. The triumphant run marks the second time Kejelcha has held the global half-marathon record, having previously set a 57:30 mark in Valencia.

The historic day in the Argentine capital proved to be a sweeping showcase of Ethiopian distance dominance. In the men's division, fellow countrymen Tadese Worku and Bereket Nega followed  yomif Kejelcha across the line to secure a full podium sweep, while Ethiopia’s Fotyen Tesfay stormed to victory in the women’s race with a world-leading time of 1:03:57.

Yomif’s breakthrough performance in Buenos Aires further cements Ethiopia’s standing atop global athletics and sets a monumental new benchmark for road racing worldwide.
