Special Adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Getachew Reda, has urged Egyptian authorities to abandon proxy strategies and recognize that constructive, direct engagement with Ethiopia remains the only viable path to protecting their national interests.
In an exclusive interview with CGTN, Getachew addressed complex regional geopolitical realignments, federal stabilization efforts, and security dynamics in Northern Ethiopia, emphasizing that attempts by foreign actors, including Cairo, to back subversive elements will fail to make a dent in Ethiopia’s national security or alter its developmental trajectory.
Discussing broader regional alignments involving Egypt, Sudan, and Eritrea, he underscored that no amount of material, logistical, or military backing for insurgent groups will ever compromise Ethiopia’s sovereign security.
Turning specifically to the Egyptian leadership, Getachew asserted that Cairo's continued reliance on proxy elements is an exercise in futility, advising policymakers that stopping the unstoppable is impossible and calling instead for genuine diplomatic dialogue with Addis Ababa as the sole effective means to advance regional stability and shared interests.
Addressing Khartoum, he called on General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s administration to immediately halt any support, including drone technology or arms supplies, to anti-Ethiopian forces, noting that such involvement directly undermines the well-being of the Sudanese people.
Meanwhile, clarifying recent reports regarding Ethiopian National Defense Force movements near the Eritrean border, Getachew noted that Eritrea's past strategic miscalculations in attempting to project conflict deep into Ethiopian territory have already failed.
While asserting that Ethiopia harbors no intention of imposing its will on Eritrea, he warned that shooting is not the answer and that talking is the only game in town, cautioning Asmara against continuing its hostile maneuvers.
