Roads: Key To Ethiopian Growth, Inclusivity, Say Leaders at Conference

Aug 26, 2025

Road infrastructure is not just about vehicles; it's about building a stronger, more inclusive Ethiopia, leaders declared at the opening of the 2nd National Road Sector Conference in Jigjiga. The focus is on connecting communities and sparking economic growth.

Somali Regional State President Mustafe Mohammed highlighted the transformative power of modern, inclusive corridor development, emphasizing that roads must cater to pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles, prioritizing convenience for all citizens.

“We have brought about real change by implementing this concept,” President Mustafa said, noting the significant benefits the Somali Regional State has derived from improvements to its road network since the shift in government policy. He stressed the importance of integrated project management to ensure the community reaps the full rewards of development.

Minister of Urban Development and Infrastructure, Chaltu Sani, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the critical role roads play in fostering public interaction and strengthening community relationships. She underscored the government's unwavering commitment to developing the road sector, recognizing its pivotal influence on both social and economic progress.

Minister Chaltu further revealed that over 101 billion birr was allocated at the federal level during the 2017 budget year for the construction and rehabilitation of over 1,000 kilometers of roads. This investment, she noted, resulted in the successful completion of 81 per cent of the planned projects.

The Minister went on to stress that achievements within the sector are not measured solely by quantity, but also by quality.

She cited the corridor development project as a prime example, highlighting its success in promoting inclusiveness and demonstrating the power of visionary planning. This corridor development project takes into account vulnerable populations.

The conference serves as a platform to discuss successes, challenges, and future strategies for advancing Ethiopia's road infrastructure.

Participants include Deputy Governor of Somali Region Ibrahim Usman, Deputy Governor of Harari Region Roza Omar, state ministers, and prominent figures from the regional and city administration road sectors. It is hoped that the conference will create a springboard for future growth.

The gathering is viewed as an opportunity to fine-tune policies and collaborations to ensure that investment translates to tangible benefits for all citizens. A key component will be discussing how the road sector can be used to improve education, reduce unemployment, and provide better healthcare.

In closing remarks, multiple speakers reemphasized that an improved road sector is the pathway to realizing Ethiopia's development goals. By prioritizing inclusivity, quality construction, and strategic investment, the nation can unlock its full potential and create a more prosperous future for all.
