ADDIS ABABA —The 2nd African Political Parties Summit has officially commenced in Addis Ababa. Today's sessions are centered on deliberations regarding the role of women and youth in political leadership.

Delivering the opening address, Minister of Youth and Sport Dr. Aklilu Tadesse emphasized that in the collective effort to build a prosperous and strong Africa, young people—who represent the continent’s core strength—must actively participate as policymakers and assume roles within government leadership.

Pointing out that over 60 percent of Africa’s total population is currently under the age of 25, the Minister stated that because these young citizens are the primary drivers of peace-building and job creation, they hold the largest stake in driving continental growth and integration.

It was highlighted that Ethiopia is taking exemplary steps grounded in the conviction that youth have the capacity to lead not just tomorrow, but today. Accordingly, numerous leadership positions across various layers of government are currently held by young professionals.

A call to action was issued for young people to move beyond being mere voters during election campaigns and directly engage in policy formulation, decision-making, and public governance to accelerate continental and national progress.

The Minister further explained that when young people are fully empowered and capable, nations become equally strong and resilient across all sectors, reiterating that the strength of the youth is the strength of Africa itself.

This effort represents a vital step toward placing youth at the center of national ownership and decision-making, elevating Africa to a higher peak of prosperity.
