Ethiopia’s Medemer philosophy is promoting women’s participation in political leadership, decision-making and economic transformation by harnessing their capabilities and contributions to national development, Culture and Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa said.
Speaking at the African Women Political Leadership Forum 2026, held on the sidelines of the African Political Parties Summit in Addis Ababa, the Minister emphasized that women’s empowerment is essential for inclusive governance, social justice and national productivity.
She noted that although women have made significant contributions to families, communities and cultural preservation, their participation in decision-making has not always reflected their contributions.
Highlighting progress following Ethiopia’s reform, Selamawit pointed to women’s growing representation in parliament, the federal cabinet and government leadership structures. However, she stressed that representation must translate into meaningful influence over national policies and strategic decisions.
The Minister also called for greater economic empowerment, urging that women be recognized not merely as beneficiaries of social protection but as entrepreneurs, investors, innovators and active contributors to economic transformation.
She further underscored the importance of education, access to technology and meaningful political participation in developing future women leaders.
Selamawit concluded that women’s participation in political leadership should be an integral part of the development process, rather than something postponed until development is achieved.
