Ethiopia Tables for Discussion Draft Transitional Justice Policy, Federal Administrative Procedure Proclamation

Ethiopian Ministry of Justice held discussion with various stakeholders on the Proclamation of Federal Administrative Procedure and Transitional Justice Policy.

Speaker of the House of People's Representatives Tagesse Chafo said at the event that successful transitional justice must be put in place to address serious human rights violations and violations committed in Ethiopia at various points in time, as well as to ensure the country's successful transition to democracy.

Tagese also stated that administrative justice is part of the justice system which places a great deal of pressure on citizens, emphasizing the importance of the debate surrounding the draft policy for the House to determine the kinds of follow-up, control, and support extended to the Ministry of Justice.

On his part, Justice Minister Gideon Timotios (PhD) emphasized that the ministry is conducting monitoring work on the federal administrative proclamation implementation in addition to carrying out the duties assigned by the proclamation.

To help the institution overcome the obstacles encountered during the implementation process, Minister Gideon said, the Ministry had created a transitional justice policy and submitted it to the appropriate government body for approval.

The Minister went on to say that transitional justice is required to fully address widespread abuses and violations of human rights that took place before the shift from armed war to peace and stability.

Leaders of democratic institutions, Presidents of Federal Courts, Deputy Speakers of the House of Representatives, and other permanent and temporary committee members were among the attendees at the event.
