Addis Ababa has been named a Gold winner in the inaugural Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety Speed Challenge, a prestigious award recognizing the city's significant progress in combating dangerous driving speeds.
The recognition highlights the successful installation of more than 2,100 speed humps across the capital, a key measure in improving road safety and protecting vulnerable road users.
The award comes with a grant of up to $100,000, which will be used to further enhance road safety initiatives in the city. The Speed Challenge, which ran from June 2023 to March 2025, aimed to encourage cities to adopt the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommended speed limits and implement effective strategies to reduce speeding, a leading cause of road-related deaths.
Bloomberg Philanthropies honored a total of eight cities for their efforts. Alongside Addis Ababa, Bogotá, Colombia, also received a Gold winner designation. Other cities recognized included Guadalajara, Mexico; Kampala, Uganda; Mumbai, India; and São Paulo, Brazil. This initiative is part of a larger global effort by Bloomberg Philanthropies, which has been working since 2007 to implement evidence-based road safety programs and has helped save an estimated 900,000 lives worldwide.
