The China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) has officially expressed a strong commitment to supporting Ethiopia's burgeoning nuclear energy program. Sandokan Debebe, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission, hosted a high-level Chinese delegation in Addis Ababa, led by Li Jing, Vice Chairman of the CAEA. The visit focused on building a strategic roadmap for the nuclear sector, with a heavy emphasis on human resource development and institutional strengthening.
A key outcome of the meeting was an agreement to launch extensive scholarship and technical exchange programs. These initiatives are designed to equip high-achieving Ethiopian students and commission staff with the specialized expertise required to drive the nation’s nuclear development agenda forward.
Beyond academic collaboration, the two sides engaged in deep consultations regarding financial modeling and the creation of robust regulatory frameworks. These discussions are essential for Ethiopia as it works to establish the legal, technical, and financial foundations necessary for the sustainable, peaceful application of nuclear energy.
The delegation also included Ma Wenjun, Vice President of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), and senior representatives from the Chinese Embassy. This meeting marks a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between Ethiopia and China, signaling a future defined by joint projects and shared innovation in the field of atomic energy.
