Ethiopia is leveraging its significant renewable energy potential to position itself as a major energy provider for East Africa and beyond, according to Dr. Habtamu Itefa, the Minister of Water and Energy.
The minister stated that Ethiopia's goal is to become an energy hub for the continent by connecting countries in the region with a reliable electricity supply. This ambition is supported by the nation's rich natural resources, including water, wind, and solar, which offer a high capacity for generating and distributing power.
Dr. Habtamu noted that power infrastructure projects currently underway will allow Ethiopia to export electricity to other countries, with efforts over the past five years already successfully increasing the national supply. Projects like the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) are seen as key to accelerating these efforts and establishing Ethiopia's leadership in regional power connectivity.
This initiative is part of a broader plan to use renewable energy development to link neighboring countries and contribute to regional stability and economic growth.
