Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) highlighted the far-reaching goals of the Addis Ababa riverside development project, stating it will not only safeguard the environment but also elevate the city’s economy and living standards. The Prime Minister’s remarks followed an inspection of the project's progress after a Prosperity Party Council meeting on Friday.
The current phase of the massive urban renewal project will span 21.5 kilometers across five sub-cities. Prime Minister Abiy noted that healthy, well-maintained riverbanks are crucial for more than just aesthetics. "Healthy, well-protected riverbanks not only safeguard ecosystems and water quality but also create vibrant public spaces that improve community well-being and strengthen cities’ resilience," he said.
The ambitious plan includes a wide array of public infrastructure, such as walkways, bike paths, public plazas, playgrounds, shops, and amphitheaters. According to the Prime Minister, the project's core objectives include eliminating river pollution, reducing the city's vulnerability to flooding, expanding green spaces, and creating significant job opportunities.
The Prime Minister concluded by emphasizing the project's long-term impact: "When completed, the project will not only protect our environment but also elevate the city's economy and living standards by providing Addis Ababa with vibrant and sustainable riverbanks."
