UN Green Finance Overhaul Poised to Accelerate Ethiopia’s Bold New Rooftop Solar Drive

Jun 23, 2026 241

At London Climate Action Week, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on multilateral development banks to aggressively de-risk green investments, throwing powerful global backing behind forward-thinking nations like Ethiopia that are actively driving their own renewable energy transitions.

By urging international banks to lower financial barriers and cut the inflated borrowing costs that developing countries face, Guterres aimed to dismantle the paradox where Africa holds 60% of the world's solar potential but receives just 2% of investment. This called-for financial overhaul stands to unlock the vital international capital needed to fully fuel and accelerate Ethiopia’s ambitious domestic climate initiatives.

This mandate arrives at a critical juncture for Addis Ababa. The Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy is currently finalizing the "National Rooftop Solar Energy Development Directive," scheduled to enter into force in July 2026. The directive aims to decentralize power generation by optimizing commercial and residential buildings across the capital to harness the country’s massive, underutilized solar potential.
