Addis Ababa City's 2019 Budget Approved at 502.27 Billion Birr

The Addis Ababa City Administration Council deliberated on the city's draft budget for the 2019 fiscal year, unanimously approving a total administration budget of 502.27 billion Birr. This was disclosed during the second day of its 3rd round, 5th year, 4th regular session. 

It was noted that the approved budget represents an increase of 152.26 billion Birr, or 43.5 percent, compared to the previous 2018 fiscal year.

Out of the approved total, it was indicated that 359.3 billion Birr is allocated for capital expenditure, 142.97 billion Birr for recurrent expenditure, and 16 billion Birr for a contingency budget.

According to the Addis Ababa City Communication Office, the budget is designed to achieve the goals and strategic priorities of the city administration's 10-year and 5-year development strategies.

It was further stated that the budget will be utilized to stabilize the economy and alleviate the high cost of living, while boosting job creation, innovation, and micro and small enterprises. It will also be used to sustainably ensure infrastructure construction and maintenance, as well as to safeguard and advance ongoing mega projects, including corridor development.

Additionally, the budget briefing highlighted that the funds will go toward improving transport and traffic flow, modernizing service delivery to eliminate corruption and maladministration, and building human resource execution capacity. The budget is also intended to ensure peace and security, strengthen housing development, successfully complete water supply and other mega projects, and expand road infrastructure.
