Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Reflects on Ethiopia's Blessings, Hardships

Sep 01, 2025

In a tale of the "End of Kusmena," Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today reflected on Ethiopia’s natural blessings and the challenges the nation has faced. The Prime Minister, in a media briefing, spoke with a tone of deep gratitude, stating, “God created us freely, gave to us freely, and permitted us freely, so there is not much to say besides 'thank you'."

He pointed to the stunning geography of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) site as a testament to the country's natural wealth. "The mountains at the dam's site show us that God gave us not only the water but also the nature to retain it," he said. “What can we say other than to thank the Creator who gave us gold combined with gushing water!”

However, the Prime Minister also expressed a profound sense of sadness and disappointment. "I feel we are people who have failed to see what we have been given," he said, lamenting that Ethiopia’s failure to utilize its abundant natural resources has led to immense hardship.

He highlighted a painful paradox: "When you consider that no other country in Africa has been as associated with famine as Ethiopia, I feel that God is saddened by our becoming a symbol of hunger because we failed to use the blessings we were given."

The Prime Minister concluded by calling on all Ethiopians to recognize their divine gifts and work diligently to use them. "Everyone should be grateful for the blessings they have received and work hard to use them to overcome challenges," he urged, emphasizing that a return to gratitude and hard work is the path to overcoming the nation's struggles.
