Stroke Foundation of Ethiopia Launched To Combat Rising Health Crisis

Sep 02, 2025

In a groundbreaking initiative to combat the alarming rise of stroke incidents in developing countries, the Stroke Foundation of Ethiopia was officially launched on Tuesday.

The foundation, established by renowned medical professional Dr. Wondewossen Gebreamanuel, aims to provide essential treatment and raise awareness about stroke prevention, particularly in Ethiopia, where the disease is becoming increasingly prevalent.

During the inauguration ceremony, Addis Ababa City Administration Mayor Adanech Abiebie emphasised the urgent need for community awareness and education regarding stroke. “Stroke is a serious and often incurable disease that affects countless individuals and families. The lack of medical professionals and awareness in our communities is are significant barriers to addressing this health crisis effectively. We must unite to prevent this disease from taking more lives,” she stated.

According to recent studies, stroke incidents have surged in Ethiopia, driven by factors such as poor lifestyle choices, limited access to healthcare, and insufficient public knowledge about the disease. The foundation aims to tackle these issues head-on by not only providing treatment but also educating the public on preventative measures.

In a progressive move, the Addis Ababa City Administration has allocated two hectares of land for the construction of a dedicated medical center focused on stroke care and rehabilitation. This facility is expected to serve as a hub for training healthcare professionals, thereby addressing the critical shortage of specialists in the country.

Moreover, Mayor Adanech highlighted an important economic aspect of healthcare: “We must ensure that Ethiopians do not have to travel abroad for medical treatment. By enhancing our local healthcare capabilities, we can keep foreign currency within our borders and provide quality care for our citizens.”

As the Stroke Foundation of Ethiopia embarks on its mission, experts are optimistic that increased awareness, combined with improved medical infrastructure, will significantly reduce stroke incidences and enhance the quality of life for many Ethiopians.
