PM Abiy Dismisses ‘Heritage Destruction’ Claims as Political Theater

Jul 01, 2026 339

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has dismissed accusations that the government’s extensive development and renovation projects are destroying historical heritage, calling the claims politically motivated rather than a genuine public concern.

Highlighting successful restorations, the Prime Minister explained that the government is preserving, beautifying, and safeguarding the nation’s heritage for future generations with the utmost care. Pointing to a culture of political opposition that reflexively criticizes government efforts, he cited the Fasil Ghebbi (Royal Enclosure) in Gondar as a prime example.

For nearly a century, the historic fortress was left to deteriorate. When the government stepped in to save it, misleading propaganda circulated. Today, however, the restored site stands as a source of immense pride for Ethiopians and a major draw for international visitors.

He emphasized that similar extreme caution has been exercised at the Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches, Jimma’s Abba Jifar Palace, Harar’s Jugol Wall, and the Sof Omar Cave—a truth testified to by local residents and elders. Furthermore, formerly neglected and dilapidated sites like the National Palace have been meticulously restored and transformed into premier tourist destinations now visited by millions.

Beyond domestic restorations, PM Abiy highlighted the successful repatriation of over 35 historical artifacts looted during various eras. With several more in ongoing negotiations, he announced that the magnificent throne of Emperor Haile Selassie I will soon be returned to Ethiopia.

The Prime Minister assured the public that these heritage projects meet international quality standards and reflect the diverse histories of all the nation's regions and religions. He vowed that baseless, politically driven criticisms will not deter the government from fulfilling its historic responsibility to protect these treasures and showcase Ethiopia's immense tourism potential to the world.
