The Irrecha festival is a powerful reflection of shared identity and is celebrated by all with freedom and equality, according to Genet Mekonnen, Head of the Bishoftu City Culture and Tourism Office.
She emphasized that Irrecha stands as a core symbol of brotherhood, peace, unity, freedom, and equality. Consequently, it is an event where all Ethiopians are encouraged to participate and shine, free from any restrictions.
The festival’s inclusion of various Ethiopian nations, nationalities, and peoples—all participating in their vibrant traditional attire—is crucial for fostering people-to-people connection, strengthening solidarity, and enhancing a deep sense of national togetherness.
Genet highlighted the profound values embedded in Oromo culture that the festival showcases, stating that Oromo Abba Gadas are fathers to all, and Oromo Hadha Sinqees are mothers to all. Speaking to EBC Dot Stream, she explained that Irrecha reflects the tradition where everyone in the Oromo community shares meals and grows up as equals, reinforcing these fundamental communal values.
The city is currently engaged in coordinated preparatory work to receive guests for the Hora Arsedi Irrecha festival in Bishoftu. Genet noted that this year’s celebration is particularly special because it occurs as the city is undergoing significant progress through an urban corridor development project.
She detailed the improvements: the corridor development has resulted in expanded pedestrian and vehicle roads throughout Bishoftu, and Hora Arsedi Lake, the heart of the celebration, has been enhanced to make it more comfortable and accessible for festival-goers.
Ultimately, the city's goal is to become a major tourism destination. Genet confirmed that comprehensive development efforts are underway, including improving hotels, guesthouses, and food and drink provisions, all aimed at successfully accommodating the influx of visitors for the cultural landmark that is Irrecha.
