Telecom Giant Launches Nationwide Reforestation Effort, Investing Millions in Green Initiatives

Ethio Telecom has officially launched a comprehensive tree planting program across all of its regional offices nationwide, including Addis Ababa, under the banner "For a Green Ethiopia." The company aims to plant 500,000 trees as part of its sustainable strategy to benefit society through green development.

The initiative kicked off with the involvement of over 4,900 Ethio Telecom employees at the corporate, zonal, and regional levels, planting trees at sites selected by the Addis Ababa Beautification and Green Development Bureau.

This marks the seventh round of the nationwide green footprint campaign in which the company has actively participated.

Planting efforts were concentrated in designated areas around Entoto and the Hamlin Fistula compound (Sand Field) at the corporate and zonal levels. Simultaneously, Ethio Telecom's 18 regions also conducted tree planting campaigns in areas assigned by their respective local governments.

Ethio Telecom has allocated over 57 million Birr to support the planting of 500,000 trees during this seventh round. Over the past six consecutive years, the company has planted more than 4.3 million trees in 805 locations nationwide, consistently maintaining an impressive average success rate of over 82.5 percent.

These efforts have transformed barren landscapes into green spaces and created temporary employment opportunities for over 23,000 citizens.

Beyond its connectivity services, Ethio Telecom is committed to realizing the vision of Digital Ethiopia by providing access to digital technology and contributing to the digital finance sector. The company also actively supports various areas of social responsibility, with environmental protection and development as a key pillar.

Ethio Telecom has invested over 1.03 billion Birr in green footprint and ecotourism programs over the past seven years, including the current campaign. Furthermore, the company is investing in infrastructure to support a green economy, such as the recently implemented electric vehicle charging stations in Addis Ababa, designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Strategies are also in place to replace fossil fuels with solar energy at network sites to compensate for power shortages.

Serving Ethiopia for 131 years, Ethio Telecom continues to fulfill its national and social responsibilities by providing new services and technologies to support overall development. The company is dedicated to designing programs that benefit both the community and the country.
