Imagine if every tree could tell a story. Some would speak of dry lands brought back to life, rivers flowing once again, wildlife returning to restored habitats and communities breathing cleaner air. Today, Ethiopia is creating those stories through the Green Legacy Initiative.

More than a nationwide tree-planting campaign, Green Legacy represents a long-term commitment to environmental restoration and sustainable development. By planting billions of seedlings, Ethiopia is restoring degraded landscapes, protecting biodiversity, strengthening food security and building resilience against the growing impacts of climate change.

The initiative also reflects a deeper African value: collective responsibility. Nature does not recognize borders. Rivers, forests and ecosystems connect communities across the continent, reminding us that environmental challenges require shared solutions. Every tree planted in Ethiopia contributes to a healthier ecosystem that benefits Africa as a whole.

Green Legacy embodies the spirit of Pan-Africanism by demonstrating that sustainable development is strongest when nations act not only for themselves but also for future generations. It is a reminder that environmental stewardship is a shared continental mission.

As the saying goes, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is today.” Every seedling planted is a promise to future generations, to Africa, and to the planet. Because the greatest legacy we can leave is not carved in stone, but rooted in the forests that will continue to grow long after we are gone.
