The Ministry of Peace is exploring a new collaboration with international partners to address the intertwined challenges of climate change and conflict.
Mohammed Idris, Minister of Peace, and State Minister Cherugeta Genene, recently met with a delegation from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Embassy of Japan.
The discussion centered on a joint project proposal aimed at "Enhancing Climate Resilience of Displacement Affected Communities in high-risk areas of Ethiopia."
Minister Mohammed Idris emphasized the critical need for peacebuilding to be a core component of any development initiative. "Any project, when being planned, must include the idea and implementation of peacebuilding," he stated. The meeting, he explained, was specifically designed to ensure that peace work is integrated into the proposed climate change project.
Representatives from UNDP, UNHCR, and the Japanese Embassy expressed their appreciation for the Ministry's approach. They noted that the success of the project would heavily rely on the support of the Ministry of Peace and praised the Minister's response to their proposal.
The initiative aims to build the capacity of communities affected by displacement due to climate-related issues, helping them better cope with environmental and social pressures. This collaboration signifies a strategic effort to link environmental sustainability with long-term peace and stability in Ethiopia.
