Ethiopia's successful bid to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 32) marks a historic moment for the nation and the African continent, affirmed Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
The Chairperson congratulated Ethiopia on its selection to stage the high-profile international climate summit.
He underscored the historical significance of the hosting decision for both Ethiopia and Africa, noting that it firmly demonstrates the continent's steadfast commitment to global climate action.
Mr. Youssouf also praised the climate leadership role being championed by Ethiopia under the guidance of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).
He highlighted Ethiopia's robust environmental protection measures, including the massive forest restoration efforts and the flagship Green Legacy Initiative.
Furthermore, he stressed Ethiopia's proven potential for successfully hosting global events, citing its strong institutional capacity and extensive experience in organizing major international and continental conferences.
The selection of Addis Ababa—the African Union's headquarters and a global diplomatic hub—to host the conference will serve to further elevate its central role in international cooperation, he added.
According to ENA, the Commission stated it will work in close partnership with Ethiopia, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and other stakeholders. The goal is to ensure COP 32 is an inclusive and effective event that advances Africa's key climate priorities and strengthens global partnerships.
Ethiopia was chosen to host COP 32, scheduled for 2027, during the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 30) currently taking place in Belém, Brazil.
African nations had previously offered their full backing for Ethiopia's aspiration to host COP 32.
