Ethiopian Political Parties Unite on National Interest, Warn Against Conflict

Aug 06, 2025

political leaders in Ethiopia are stressing the need to put aside their differences for the sake of the nation's well-being. Citing that "political fracture cannot be healed by conflict," leaders from various parties are urging a united front to ensure stability and national security.

This message highlights a growing consensus that working together is essential for the country's future, with a focus on protecting national interests and promoting peace.

During a recent discussion on ETV, representatives from various parties stressed that the responsibility for citizens' well-being, lasting peace, and the protection of national interests should not fall to a single party. Solomon Ayele, Chairman of the Ethiopian Political Parties Joint Council, warned that conflicts that begin as minor issues have grown to exact a heavy price, causing not only political division but also economic strain.

Dr. Birhanu Alemu of the Boro Democratic Party highlighted the pervasive impact of political discourse, stating that the influence of politicians, for better or worse, permeates society. He urged leaders to promote ideas that unite and prevent conflict.

This sentiment was echoed by Addis Mohammed of the Freedom and Equality Party, who declared, "Peace should not be a matter for negotiation because it is a matter of survival."

The leaders also referenced the "Bishoftu Pledge," affirming that it reinforces a collective commitment to national interests. Furthermore, they called on political parties to responsibly guide their members, particularly in electoral districts, and urged armed groups to embrace peace to prevent disagreements from escalating.
