The Office of the Prime Minister has announced that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is now actively generating electricity, supplying power to households, commercial establishments, and neighboring nations.
In a statement addressing current national developments, the Office underscored that the GERD stands as a testament to national self-reliance. It highlighted that the project was entirely supported by Ethiopians, designed and constructed by Ethiopian engineers, and successfully completed despite sustained external pressures.
Beyond its flagship hydropower efforts, the government is aggressively expanding the nation's renewable energy portfolio. The Office noted key ongoing projects, including the Aisha II wind power facility in the Somali Region and the Assela wind power project in the Arsi Zone. These initiatives are designed to bolster the national grid’s resilience while simultaneously fostering greater regional energy cooperation.
The Office further emphasized that these achievements are part of a broader trajectory of major infrastructure development, pointing to the launch of the Bishoftu International Airport project. Describing it as one of the largest infrastructure investments in African history, the Prime Minister's Office affirmed, “These are not mere aspirations; they are tangible realities.”
