ONLF Rejects Claims of Affiliation With Armed Groups, Reaffirms Commitment to Peace Agreement

Jun 08, 2026 179

The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) has formally rejected allegations of affiliation with any armed groups and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the 21 October 2018 peace agreement signed in Asmara. Under the leadership of Chairman Abdikarim Sheikh Muse, the organization confirmed its dedication to fully respecting and implementing the provisions of the agreement, while calling upon the Ethiopian government to uphold its own commitments in good faith. The ONLF emphasized that this agreement has been the essential foundation for the peace and stability currently enjoyed in the Somali Region and expressed strong opposition to any actions that might undermine these hard-won gains.

The party clarified its position regarding recent internal leadership disputes, specifically addressing the status of its former chairman, Abdirahman Mahdi. The ONLF stated that Mahdi was formally relieved of his chairmanship during the ONLF Congress held in Jigjiga in June 2025, at which time Abdikarim Sheikh Muse was duly elected as the new chairman. Consequently, any actions, decisions, or public statements issued by Mahdi after that date are considered his personal activities and do not reflect the official policies or objectives of the ONLF.

Furthermore, the party warned that the X (formerly Twitter) account operating under the handle @ONLFofficial is not an official party channel and does not represent the organization. The ONLF urges all supporters, media organizations, and members of the public to exercise caution and rely exclusively on officially authorized channels for accurate information regarding the party’s stance and activities.
