A memorial service is underway at the National Theater today for the revered artist Debebe Eshetu, who passed away on Sunday. The ceremony has drawn family, friends, colleagues, and fans who have gathered to pay their respects and celebrate his life and legacy.
Tributes are being delivered to honor Debebe Eshetu's immense contributions to Ethiopian arts. His burial is scheduled for 2:00 PM today at the Menbere Tsebaot Holy Trinity Cathedral.
Debebe Eshetu, who had been receiving medical care for an illness, was a prolific figure in the Ethiopian arts scene. He was a versatile talent, making significant contributions as a writer, translator, director, and actor. His career spanned radio, television, film, and journalism, and he was particularly celebrated for his memorable performances on the stage.
He served for many years at the Hager Fikir and National Theater, beginning his theatrical career with Mengistu Lemma's "Yalacha Gabicha." He went on to star in numerous popular productions, including "Romeo and Juliet," "Othello," "The Merchant of Venice," and "The Game of Chess," Telfo Bekis’e, Dandew Chebud’e, Ande Amet Ke AndKen, Yazawentoch kebeb, Yewef Gojo, Maebel among others.
Beyond his artistic work, Debebe Eshetu was also recognized for his civic engagement. He was a leader in volunteer work and played a prominent role during national crises. In 2002, he expanded his public service by becoming a member of parliament. In recognition of his lifetime of work and contributions, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Addis Ababa University.
