Aug 19, 2025

The Defense Engineering Industry Group, a key player in Ethiopia's industrial sector, is expanding its focus beyond military support to address the country's civilian transportation needs. Its Bishoftu Motor Vehicles Engineering Industry is now assembling a variety of vehicles and small boats for the domestic market.

Lieutenant Colonel Sisay Tessema, the industry's Deputy General Manager, highlighted the new initiative, stating, "We are using advanced automotive technology to assemble various vehicles and small boats, contributing to solving the nation's transportation challenges."

The company is manufacturing small recreational boats using materials such as fiberglass and aluminum. "We are working with local micro and small-scale professionals here in Bishoftu to assemble these boats using our own original designs," Lt. Col. Sisay added.

In addition to marine vessels, the facility is producing various road vehicles, including buses, with a production capacity of one bus per day. Lt. Col. Sisay emphasized the company's commitment to quality, noting that all vehicles undergo rigorous inspections throughout the production process and are tested on different roads before being released to the market.

The Deputy General Manager stated that the institution employs over 1,700 people and actively collaborates with both private and public organizations across the country. Looking ahead, he mentioned that the company is already preparing to begin manufacturing electric vehicles, aligning with the government's strategic focus on sustainable transportation.
