Ethiopia will open the African Leadership Excellence Academy’s training programmes to political parties across the continent, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced, offering the institution as a shared resource for preparing Africa’s next generation of leaders.
Addressing the Second African Political Parties Summit in Addis Ababa, the Prime Minister identified leadership renewal as one of the essential commitments parties must pursue to strengthen governance and sustain long-term development. He warned that countries risk losing momentum when experienced leaders fail to prepare their successors, and stressed the need to entrust younger members with greater responsibility while promoting those who show sound judgment and integrity.
“Ethiopia will contribute through the African Leadership Excellence Academy. It will open its training to all parties across the continent,” Abiy said.
The offer extends Ethiopia’s contribution beyond dialogue, providing a practical platform through which parties from different African countries can build leadership capacity and equip future political leaders. Abiy emphasized that developing new leaders must be a deliberate and continuous duty of political organizations, not a task deferred until transitions become unavoidable.
His proposal aligns with the summit’s broader purpose of enabling African political parties to exchange experience and explore ways to strengthen governance, institutional capacity and the continent’s overall development path. By making the Academy’s programmes available continent-wide, Ethiopia is placing its institutional experience at the service of a collective effort to cultivate capable leaders for the future.
