Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission Launches Diaspora Engagement in Washington D.C.

Aug 30, 2025

The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC) has kicked off a series of forums in Washington D.C. to gather agenda items from Ethiopians and those of Ethiopian descent across North America. The event, held at the Watergate Hotel, is part of a broader effort to foster lasting peace and address the nation's long-standing disagreements.

During his opening remarks, Chief Commissioner Mesfin Araya (Professor) drew a sharp contrast between Ethiopia and the host nation. "The U.S., where you live, is younger than Ethiopia, yet it has reached the pinnacle of democracy," he stated, attributing Ethiopia's delayed progress to centuries of internal conflict. He emphasized that the time has now come to identify and resolve these fundamental issues through a public and inclusive dialogue.

The Chief Commissioner noted that the ENDC, established in February 2022, has been working to ensure that Ethiopians participate in this historic process without preconditions. He stressed the importance of including the diaspora, saying that despite being abroad, their connection to Ethiopia’s affairs remains strong.

Professor Mesfin also addressed those who have attempted to obstruct the Commission's work, stating that the process has been successful due to widespread support. He called on those living in democratic societies to engage in the process democratically, even if they disagree with it, rather than resorting to unprincipled protest.

Gera Getachew, a coordinator for the Commission, told EBC Dotstream that similar forums are planned for Canada, the U.K., Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates.

Concluding his remarks, Chief Commissioner Mesfin Araya outlined the critical tasks ahead: holding a dialogue forum in the Tigray region, finalizing the diaspora engagement, formulating the official agenda, and overseeing the main national dialogue.
