The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, delivered a forceful address at a Leaders Summit in Belém, Brazil, declaring that Africa arrives at the upcoming COP30 climate negotiations "with conviction" and demanding an immediate course correction on global climate financing.

Chairperson Youssouf framed the continent as an "agent of transformation" towards a just, inclusive, and low-carbon future, citing African leadership in solar energy development and youth-driven green innovation.

However, he sharply criticized the current disparities in funding, highlighting a critical paradox: "Africa, home to 40% of global renewable potential, receives less than 12% of climate finance."

The chairperson was resolute in his demand for equitable support. "We do not ask for charity but for climate justice, fair access to finance, technology, and opportunity," he stated. He stressed that nations least responsible for the climate crisis must not be forced to bear its heaviest burdens.

In concluding his remarks, Youssouf issued a clear mandate for the global summit. He insisted that COP30 must serve as the moment the world shifts "from pledges to progress, from vulnerability to vitality," guided by the principles of solidarity and shared prosperity.

"The time for half measures is over. The time for bold, united action is now," he urged.
