PM Abiy Announces National Cloud Project to Secure Ethiopia’s "Digital Sovereignty"

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has unveiled an ambitious plan to transition Ethiopia from basic database management to a comprehensive national cloud system, describing the move as a matter of "generational survival."

Speaking on the progress of the "Digital 2030" strategy, the prime minister emphasized that information is the bedrock of the future. He warned that failing to manage data systematically today would create insurmountable hurdles for the next generation. While acknowledging that institutions like the Ethiopian Press Agency and the PM Office have successfully digitized decades of historical archives, he noted that current data remains scattered. The proposed National Cloud, expected to be completed within 18 to 24 months, aims to centralize and secure this information across all sectors.

The Prime Minister linked this infrastructure directly to the concept of digital sovereignty. He cautioned that "every word spoken is data, and data is money," warning that without a domestic cloud, this national wealth would benefit other nations. Highlighting the current linguistic weaknesses in local artificial intelligence (AI), Dr. Abiy argued that a lack of indigenous data threatens Ethiopia’s culture and history in the digital age. He called on mainstream media to modernize their technology and urged leaders to prioritize institutional transparency over personal relationships to ensure information remains an accessible national asset.
