Domestic, International Observers Set to Monitor Ethiopia’s 7th General Election

May 30, 2026 40

The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has emphasized the pivotal role of election observers in ensuring that the 7th General Election, scheduled for this coming Monday, June 1, 2026, is conducted in a free, impartial, and credible manner. To oversee this democratic milestone, a wide array of accredited monitors—including representatives from domestic civil society organizations, international bodies, and political candidates—have been officially deployed across the country.

To maintain the integrity of the process, the law requires that all participating civil society organizations remain strictly non-profit, politically neutral, and independent of government influence. A robust monitoring framework has been established, featuring 55 domestic civil society organizations, a 59-member African Union (AU) observer mission, and a 26-member delegation from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), all of whom are now officially operational.

These observers hold the mandate to be physically present at polling stations, where they may monitor the voting and counting processes, access information from election officials, and report any irregularities directly to the NEBE. Furthermore, political parties and individual candidates are entitled to assign both stationary and mobile representatives to oversee procedures at the constituency and polling station levels.

While the role of observers is essential to transparency, the NEBE has underscored the importance of professional conduct. All observers are required to carry their official identification at all times, adhere to the instructions of election officials, and refrain from any form of interference in the electoral process. The Board maintains a strict regulatory stance: any observer found in violation of the code of conduct faces disciplinary actions, which may range from formal warnings to the immediate revocation of their observer status.

Ultimately, the NEBE views the presence of impartial and law-abiding observers not only as a safeguard for the success of this election but also as a foundational pillar for Ethiopia’s long-term peace and the continued development of its democratic system.
