The Ministry of Peace has announced the failure of comprehensive attacks launched by extremist forces and external adversaries aimed at disrupting Ethiopia’s 7th general election and destabilizing public peace.
In a statement, Minister of Peace Mohammed Idris noted that elements opposed to national reforms have, for some time, been engaged in propaganda and psychological warfare using modern technology, alongside carrying out acts of terrorism on the ground.
The Ministry explained that while the Ethiopian government prioritized the election as a vehicle for national survival and democratic state-building, internal mercenaries, seeking to seize power by force rather than the ballot box and foreign actors hostile to Ethiopia’s development orchestrated extensive plots before, during, and after the voting process to derail it.
These destructive elements, the Ministry stated, campaigned to delegitimize the government and plunge the country into lawlessness by urging citizens to avoid voter registration, boycott political rallies, and abstain from voting on election day.
However, the Ministry emphasized that the Ethiopian public defeated these efforts by rejecting the extremist agenda. Citizens demonstrated their opposition to these calls through high voter registration rates, free attendance at rallies, and a massive turnout to cast their votes.
Acknowledging that this democratic achievement was not without cost, the Ministry of Peace stated that terrorist plots were thwarted through timely and coordinated counter-measures by security institutions.
While noting that there were terrorist attacks intended to fracture national unity, the Ministry concluded that the sacrifices made by the public serve as a clear expression of their firm commitment to rejecting extremism and establishing a legitimate government to ensure the country's continuity.
