Secrets of the Sunken City Unveiled at Alexandria Museum

Aug 22, 2025

The Alexandria National Museum has opened a new exhibition titled "Secrets of the Sunken City," showcasing artifacts from the Greek, Roman, and Hellenistic periods that were recovered from underwater sites.

The exhibition's opening was attended by Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Mohamed. He noted that the recovery of these pieces is in accordance with UNESCO agreements that allow Egypt to extract certain artifacts while leaving others in their original locations.

According to a local archaeology expert, Ali Abu Deshish, this is the first time these specific artifacts—which include coins, statues of emperors, and other treasures—are being displayed within Egypt, though some have been shown abroad previously. The artifacts were recovered from sites such as Abu Qir Bay and the sunken royal quarter in Alexandria's eastern harbor, following missions that began in 2000. Egypt is a signatory to the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. The story is from Viory.
