Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) visited the Ethiopia Meteorology Institute, highlighting the long-standing institution's work as vital to the country’s development and resilience. He noted that the visit reaffirmed the importance of meteorological data collection, scientific research, and technological advancement in strengthening the country’s capacity to understand and respond to changing weather and climate conditions.
Strengthening institutions like the Ethiopia Meteorology Institute is essential. Investing in human capacity, modern technologies, and data infrastructure is critical to improving the services on which key sectors, including agriculture, water, health, aviation, and disaster risk management, depend. He was particularly encouraged by the importance of early warning systems in helping anticipate risks, identify where interventions are most needed, and engage in a timely and effective manner.
Reliable data, when translated into actionable information, saves lives, protects livelihoods, and supports better decision-making. Such work goes beyond satellite observation, as it also depends on a robust network of data collection stations and data centers across the country, where information is gathered, processed, and analyzed to inform timely action.
