Egypt's Century-Old Strategy to Keep Ethiopia Landlocked

Oct 14, 2026 307

Egypt has spent more than a century exerting pressure to prevent Ethiopia from securing sea access and freely utilizing its water resources, according to former Oromia Regional State President Juneidin Sado. In an exclusive interview with ETV Afaan Oromoo, Juneidin noted that Cairo has consistently plotted various conspiracies over the generations to block Ethiopia from reaching the Red Sea, pointing out that this underlying agenda remains unchanged to this day.

Emphasizing Ethiopia's vast resources and immense development potential, Juneidin stressed that if the nation sets aside its current internal challenges and differences to focus squarely on progress, it can successfully achieve its grand national goals. He added that an economically empowered Ethiopia with stable national politics would be uniquely positioned to advance major national initiatives with greater capacity, most notably the development of the Abay River.

For over a century, Egypt has worked to keep Ethiopia landlocked and away from the Red Sea, says former Oromia President Juneidin Sado. He stressed that a stable Ethiopia can drive projects like the Abay River by prioritizing growth.
