Sep 01, 2025

A  foundation stone has been laid on Monday for a new, climate-resilient water project in the Tigray region, a significant step toward improving water access for thousands of residents. The project, with an investment of over ETB 483 million, is part of a national initiative to enhance water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure.

The ceremony was attended by key officials, including Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa and the President of the Tigray Regional Interim Administration, Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede. Also present were Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation Ambassador Asfaw Dengamo and the head of the regional water bureau.

The project, known as the Tanqua Abergele Project, is one of 18 climate-resilient initiatives under the second phase of Ethiopia’s One WASH National Program. It aims to provide safe water to 30,438 people upon completion. Feasibility and design studies were a collaborative effort between regional experts and professionals from the Ministry of Water and Energy.

Asia Rising Consultancy has been awarded the contract for the project, which is expected to be completed in just over a year. The total cost of ETB 483,125,135 will be partially funded by the Tigray Region, which will contribute 30% of the investment.

The comprehensive project includes the construction of four water wells, two large reservoirs, 48 kilometers of water pipelines, and 45 water tanks. Additionally, the plan incorporates building water facilities for seven schools, three health centers, and eight livestock watering troughs.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of a collaborative effort from all levels of government and the community to ensure the project is completed successfully.
