Ethiopia Announces Plan to Build Nuclear Power Plant for Peaceful Use

Sep 09, 2025

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced a new wave of ambitious mega-projects, asserting the nation's commitment to self-sufficiency and economic transformation. The prime minister's vision includes launching a nuclear power facility for peaceful purposes, a project he likened in scale and significance to the recently inaugurated Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Beyond nuclear energy, Dr. Abiy outlined a comprehensive plan to propel Ethiopia forward. He confirmed that construction will soon begin on a new airport for Ethiopian Airlines, which is poised to become the largest aviation hub in Africa.

The coming weeks will also see the inauguration of the nation's first gas factory, with plans to immediately start building a second facility ten times its size. This is part of a broader strategy that includes the long-awaited oil refinery project and a new fertilizer factory to boost agricultural productivity. Furthermore, the government aims to construct a minimum of 1.5 million houses over the next five to six years. These projects, collectively valued at over $30 billion, are designed to showcase Ethiopia’s progress and inspire the continent.

Dr. Abiy urged Ethiopians to look to the future, stating, "I ask you to be ready for the difficult tasks that await us, rather than talking about the great deeds we have already done." He declared that the "time for Ethiopia's revival has been announced in every direction" and called for national unity to make this vision a reality.
