Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamiru announced that over 4.9 trillion Birr has been transferred to date through the Telebirr application.

In her explanation regarding the institution's performance for the 2017 Ethiopian budget year, Frehiwot stated that Ethio Telecom is undertaking numerous initiatives to realize a digital Ethiopia.

She elaborated that in the concluded budget year, 512 cities gained access to 4G network services, and 16 cities received 5G network services.

She also mentioned that 1,683 new mobile stations were installed, which has made network service faster and more efficient.

It was also noted that efforts have been made to strengthen digital finance to provide efficient, modern, accessible, and inclusive services.

She pointed out that internet service has been made accessible in 2,388 kebeles, and in that year, 5.9 million citizens gained access to internet services.

The CEO stated that significant results have been achieved in revitalizing Ethiopia's financial industry through Telebirr, adding that the number of Telebirr customers has now reached 54.8 million.

She further detailed that 2.3 trillion Birr was transferred via Telebirr during the budget year, and currently, the total money transferred through Telebirr has reached 4.9 trillion Birr.
