Africa Adopts "Addis Ababa Declaration"Ahead of COP30

Sep 12, 2025

The Addis Ababa Declaration, a document outlining Africa's unified climate change agenda for the upcoming COP30 summit in Brazil, has been successfully approved.

The approval follows the conclusion of the Africa Climate Change Summit in Addis Ababa, which brought together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to define the continent's clear stance on climate action. In a joint statement, the African Union and the Government of Ethiopia announced the declaration's adoption, highlighting it as a significant step for Africa's role in global climate negotiations.

The summit, which saw the participation of approximately 25,000 individuals and hosted over 199 discussions, focused on two main pillars: accelerating global climate solutions and securing financial support for Africa's green economy initiatives. An exhibition also featured 43 developers showcasing their work in the climate sector.

The declaration is a landmark agreement among leaders, specifically aimed at ensuring strengthened and continuous financial support for climate initiatives. It seeks to reinforce African-led climate projects, including the African Union's Green Development and African Landscape Restoration initiatives, as well as Ethiopia's own Green Legacy project.

This unified position is designed to empower Africa's voice at COP30, positioning the continent not merely as a victim of climate change but as a central driver of solutions and green economic growth, reported FBC.
