On Thursday, a significant gathering of respected elders, former heads of state, scholars, and civic leaders convened in Nairobi under the banner of the IGAD Council of Eminent Personalities. This high-level forum, organized by IGAD, led by Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, in collaboration with the Government of Kenya, led by Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage, Hannah Cheptumo, aimed to leverage collective experience and influence to tackle the complex crises facing East Africa, from ongoing conflicts to severe climate impacts.
The assembly underscored the crucial role that impartial and trusted leadership plays when formal systems falter. Speaking at the forum, Dr. Workneh emphasized, "Our legitimacy comes not from power, but from trust. We must turn the thunder of conflict into the whisper of reconciliation." His powerful words highlighted the moral authority and guiding wisdom that these eminent figures bring to the table in times of profound challenge.
As IGAD nears its 40th anniversary, this gathering represents a decisive step towards formally embedding the Council within the organization's structure, thereby enhancing preventive diplomacy across the entire region. The Government of Kenya was warmly acknowledged for hosting this pivotal event, and sincere appreciation was also extended to international partners, particularly the Government of Japan, for their ongoing support. The collective ambition is to foster the lasting peace and stability that the people of East Africa so urgently need and deserve.
