Experts Convene In Addis Ababa To Tackle Food Security Challenges

By: Kassahun Chanie

This morning, experts from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states gathered in Addis Ababa for a critical meeting focused on food security and regional opportunities.

The meeting, which brings together Food Security Focal Persons from IGAD countries, aims to address pressing agricultural issues and prepare for a forthcoming Ministerial Event scheduled for July 28, 2025.

The agenda includes an in-depth review of key themes related to food security, such as sustainable agricultural practices, climate resilience, and regional cooperation.

Participants are expected to engage in detailed discussions aimed at identifying actionable strategies that can be implemented across member states to enhance food security and promote agricultural development.

In addition to thematic discussions, the experts will deliberate on a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) designed to strengthen collaboration among IGAD member states in the areas of agriculture and food security.

This MoU, once validated, will be presented for approval by the IGAD Ministers of Agriculture and Food Security, marking a significant step towards unified action in addressing food insecurity in the region.

The meeting is particularly timely given the escalating challenges posed by climate change, population growth, and economic instability that threaten food systems across East Africa.

By fostering dialogue and cooperation among member states, the IGAD aims to create a more resilient agricultural sector capable of meeting the needs of its growing populations.

As discussions unfold, stakeholders remain hopeful that the outcomes of this meeting will pave the way for enhanced food security initiatives and collaborative frameworks that can significantly improve the livelihoods of millions across the IGAD region.

The commitment to addressing these vital issues underscores the importance of collective action in ensuring food availability and sustainability for future generations.
