A historian and researcher, Belete Sigebo, argues that the current generation of Ethiopians should embrace the issue of sea access with the same fervor as their national anthem.
Speaking with ETV, Belete highlighted the nation's success in completing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a testament to the Ethiopian people's collective effort. He stressed that the country's next major focus must be on regaining sea access, a matter he considers vital for national survival and identity.
To resolve what he called the "historical grievances" of the Ethiopian people, Belete insists that the country must secure access to the sea. He emphasized that Ethiopia will use diplomatic, legal, and peaceful means to claim this right.
He also pointed out the historical significance of sea access, noting that both Christianity and Islam entered the country by sea. This connection, he added, was a major source of Ethiopia's civilization, and he claimed that deliberate attempts were made to sever it.
In conclusion, Belete commended the government and the people for their renewed focus on this critical issue, stating that they are learning from past mistakes.
