A Scholar Argues Ethiopia’s History of Independence is Its Greatest Asset

Sep 24, 2025

Dagnachew Assefa (PhD), a philosophy lecturer at Addis Ababa University, argued that Ethiopia's unique history as an uncolonized nation gives it a distinct advantage: the freedom to build its future on its own terms.

Part 2 of the discussion, titled "The Tale of Medemer," aired last night. Dr. Dagnachew explained that a great leader inspires their people, promotes a "can-do" attitude, and forges a new path. He pointed to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, noting that the prime minister's book, The Medemer Government, does exactly this. The lecturer explained that the Medemer philosophy rejects extremism in favor of a "golden mean," a balanced approach that embraces diversity instead of suppressing it.

Dr. Dagnachew emphasized that after years of stagnation, Ethiopians need someone to "knock on the door and wake them up." He believes it's vital to motivate the new generation with a sense of possibility. He highlighted the book’s message of hope: the generation that achieved the historic victories of the first and second Adwa—the latter being the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam—can now aspire to build a sea outlet and even an atomic energy institution.

Despite this optimism, Dr. Dagnachew stressed the importance of providing accurate information and analysis to the diaspora, ensuring they have a correct understanding of both Ethiopia and the Medemer Government philosophy.
