Scholars Discuss "Ideology-less Politics," Its Impact on Ethiopia

Sep 24, 2025

The use of political power for personal gain, a tendency that has long held Ethiopia back, has been defined as "ideology-less politics" in a pointed discussion on ETV's "Ye Medemer Weg" broadcast last night. Philosophy lecturer Dr. Dagnachew Assefa, joined by Minister of Planning and Development Dr. Fitsum Assefa, dissected the concept, which is highlighted in the Medemer government's own literature.

On her part. Dr. Fitsum Assefa, the Minister of Planning and Development, agreed, stating that this form of politics is the reason for Ethiopia’s political instability. She pointed out that political actors have turned the political landscape into a personal market, a key cause of the nation’s problems.

Both scholars argued that the solution lies in building a robust system that takes power away from individuals and gives it to institutions. They suggested that this is a direct threat to the "ideology-less" politicians who thrive in a chaotic environment. Dr. Fitsum stressed the urgency of this move and assured the audience that the government is already on this path.

For his part, Zerihun Teshome noted that the spread of social media has created a fertile ground for ideology-less politics. He explained that for their market, these politicians prefer to say "one person died" rather than "nine people were saved." This approach, he added, has shackled Ethiopia and prevented it from moving forward. He concluded by asking, "Why don't we choose to fight with ideas while we're living, instead of fighting while we're dying?" Zerihun stressed that ideology-less politics will not lead to the desired outcome.
