Intensive research is vital to unlock Ethiopia's tourism potential, declared Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa today at the opening of the 5th National Tourism Sector Research Conference, in Addis Ababa.
The three-day conference, themed "Tourism for Sustainable Change," brings together leading academics, government officials, and industry stakeholders from across Ethiopia and internationally.
Minister Selamawit emphasised the nation's rich cultural, historical, and natural resources, arguing that comprehensive research is the key to maximising the economic and social benefits of the sector.
"We must ensure that our research efforts directly contribute to the growth and sustainability of our tourism industry," she stated, highlighting the need for evidence-based policymaking.
The conference, organised by the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Tourism, features numerous research papers directly addressing the conference theme. These papers will be presented and debated by scholars throughout the event. Attendees will be discussing strategies for sustainable tourism development, balancing economic growth with environmental protection and community well-being.
A wide range of participants are present. Senior Ministry of Tourism leaders are joined by members of the Federal House of People's Representatives' Standing Committee on Trade and Tourism Affairs. Representatives from regional and city administrations, crucial institutions supporting the Ministry, and key federal and regional stakeholders are all taking part.
The international community is also represented through the participation of partner institutions.
Discussions are expected to cover a range of topics, including sustainable infrastructure development, responsible tourism practices, community engagement, and the role of technology in promoting Ethiopia's tourism sector.
The Minister expressed hope that the conference will yield actionable recommendations to strengthen the tourism sector, ultimately driving economic growth while preserving Ethiopia's invaluable heritage for future generations.
The event is seen as a crucial step in shaping the future of tourism in the country, with the findings expected to inform future policy and investment decisions.
The closing ceremony will include a summary of key findings and recommendations for government and sector stakeholders.
