Participants of the second UN Food Systems Summit +4 (UNFSS+4) toured key agricultural production clusters in Adama City of Oromia Regional State.
A delegation of global nations and development partners visited a dairy production cluster operating with 953 cows. This facility produces 3,800 liters of milk daily for local processors and markets, while creating employment for 205 individuals — 70% of whom are women.
They also toured the Melka Adama Poultry Production Cluster, a large integrated poultry farm. The farm spans the full value chain from parent stock to egg production, housing 240,000 hens and producing 155,000 eggs daily.
Talking to EBC world, summit participants praised the dairy and poultry clusters for their contribution to food system transformation. They commended Ethiopia’s efforts towards achieving food self-sufficiency and food sovereignty, identifying the initiatives as exemplary models for replication across Africa.
The delegation highlighted Africa's vast potential to feed itself, emphasizing the need to scale up initiatives in dairy, poultry, fisheries, and fruit production to unlock sustainable agricultural growth across the continent.
These developments are part of Ethiopia's "Yelemat Tirufat" or Bounty of the Basket initiative, launched in 2022 to boost dairy, polutry, fishery and other products.
In addition to site visits, delegates planted tree seedlings as part of Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative, which aims to combat climate change and strengthen food security through reforestation efforts.
Ethiopia is hosting the second UNFSS+4 Summit slated to take place from July 27 to 29, 2025, bringing together global stakeholders to advance sustainable food systems and ensure food security for future generations.
